He was a longtime student of surbahar maestro Annapurna Devi, one of India’s most revered musicians. He continues his guru’s tradition of taking students on other instruments, including flute, saxophone, violin, guitar and vocals, and holds ‘listening sessions’ on the works of Maihar gharana greats such as Alauddin Khan. His bansuri style fuses the ideas of Wazir Khan and Pannalal Ghosh. Hear more of Nityanand here: -Interview Pt. 1 | -Interview Pt. 2 | Kafi is a midnight raga, derived from North Indian folk forms. It is based on the swaras SRgmPDnS - a pattern once considered to be a ‘home scale’ reference point for Hindustani theory. Carnatic Raga Kharaharapriya and the Western Dorian mode use the same notes, which also form the basis for other popular ragas such as Bhimpalasi and Bageshri. But the modern Kafi is distinguished from these by its versatility, usually taking a ‘Mishra’ [mixed] form with notes from outside the scale (in fact it is rare to hear a ‘pure’ rendition of it).
