The Baroque is a highly ornate and often extravagant style of architecture, music, painting, sculpture and dance that flourished in Europe from the early 17th until the mid-18th century. It followed the Renaissance style with great innovations in dance originating at the French court under Louis 14th, where we see the first clear stylistic ancestor of classical ballet. Baroque means “irregular“ in French, and is said to originate from the Portuguese word “barroco“ meaning “imperfect pearl,“ like the irregular shaped pearl that was used in the jewelry of the time.
